Honestly, if I was friends with the person next door I'd be tempted to coordinate with them to do this just to mess with people. Don't think that's what's happening here, but it'd be funny

605

u/Smartnership Aug 14 '22

And switch them on random days.

312

u/trimtab28 Aug 14 '22

Not random days... it has to be every third Tuesday of the month so they think there's some deep symbolic meaning behind the act

94

u/anally_ExpressUrself Aug 14 '22

Sounds random enough for me

Back in the day our student society had enough interest to run two rec soccer teams. So we decided to name them "The Axis of Evil" and "The Bush Administration". And of course we ended up playing each other first game.

The ref loved it.

Dick Cheney (R - Haliburton).

We were about as prepared and competent as the guys who stormed the Capitol.

It’s like the Wile E. Coyote and sheepdog cartoon.

277

u/puckit Aug 13 '22

Well I'll be damned if that isn't the first time I've ever heard Wile E. Coyote's voice.

348

u/Trainiax Aug 14 '22

That isn’t Wile E., that’s Ralph Wolf. Two different characters, although in the cartoons with Wile E. and Bugs Wile E. talks.

36

u/ladylurkedalot Aug 14 '22

Wile E Coyote, suuuper geeeenius!

146

Ralph has a red nose and Wile E. has a black nose. That's the only difference in character design.

Oh and Wile E. has yellow eyes and Ralph's are white.

44

u/cranfeckintastic Aug 14 '22

Ralph's also got that fang sticking out of his mouth.

71

u/ihavebeesinmyknees Aug 14 '22

Reminds me of a joke:

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"

He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"

Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

Is this PA, MD, or VA? (Or WV?) I am getting a Hagerstown vibe, super curious about where this is based on the architecture.

Hopefully they can peacefully co-exist, of course! But seems like it would at least be awkward in today’s climate.

268

u/Gizarizzi Aug 13 '22

Haha good recognition. This is Northeastern PA.

61

u/loser7787 Aug 13 '22

In my head I would like to believe they are good friends in spite of politics.

In Northeast PA myself, this certainly looks like it could be any neighborhood around here. I’m in the Scranton / Dickson City area, how about you?

24

u/senorbolsa Aug 14 '22 edited Aug 14 '22

That really is the vibe in a lot of PA somehow. You don't pick your neighbors, no reason to pick fights with them.

My uncle lives in a little town in the middle of nowhere PA and it seems pretty split politically but people get along because they have to. Not everyone is bit by the bug of sourness even if they have strong beliefs or support for a political candidate.

10

u/simpson95338 Aug 14 '22

It's the same out here in MD, I live in a small town close to PA and its pretty much 50-50 Trump/Biden but aside from everyone having all their flags and crap out front we all get along perfectly fine.

5

u/BuddhaDBear Aug 14 '22

This is why I love north Jersey. Most people are socially liberal and fiscally anywhere from moderate to conservative, but very few Qanon types. The republicans are not usually trump republicans and the ones that are like his deregulation and lower business taxes but tend to hate him as a person. Overall there is very little political conflict around here.

PA is the microcosm of the entire US.

We have the east and west coast (Philly and Pittsburgh), and deep red in the middle. We're so politically divided we have the most political ads out of any other state and we're one of if not THE key swing state. We have some of the most diverse nature in the country. We're blue enough to have high taxes and red enough to not get any of the social safety nets those taxes should secure. We have good drivers and we have dogshit drivers. Some places that are walkable and bikeable while mostly being a car filled hellscape.

If you ever are visiting the US and wanna see what's as close to all of the US you can get on one trip, come visit PA.

Edit to add: we have both snow and sweltering heat because we're practically right between New England and the South. We also have our own grand canyon apparently.

10

u/SJane3384 Aug 14 '22

One thing to point out: Medicare and basic needs for children are a lot better in PA than most of the country. It’s part of why I moved here.

How do you make your entire existence revolve around a politician? It’s like a rabid sports fan but with greater consequences. A demagogue politician none the less.

36

u/cthuluwamp Aug 14 '22

I'm pretty sure if you live in a house with only a firewall between you and crazy mcdingus would make you put up a small sign just to let him know to keep crazy off your side of the lawn.

From there I'm sure it's a pretty easy road to radicalization.

38

u/megaman368 Aug 14 '22

It’s sort of like being an atheist. This is how I see it anyway. Being an atheist doesn’t have any shape on its own. You simply don’t believe. The more you have to deal with religious people and their nonsense. The harder you have to push back and give your atheism shape. You have to use logic to argue with faith presented as logic. Which is deeply frustrating.

The same goes with politics. I’d be just a casual mid left liberal with a loose set of ideals. Trying to find someone how best represented those ideals. In comes the right. Which has degrees, but is very much a team sport. Now I’m forced to dig in my heals against that gish gallop. Seething at half my coworkers about the ridiculous nonsense they spout constantly. After the last 6 years I’ll be damned if I’d ever vote in a republican for anything. Right down to the town dog catcher. Which in one way makes me just like them. I don’t feel great about that.

A small sign and a legit flag pole. I’m curious when that flag pole was put in in relationship to when these particular residents moved in.

In my head I’m imagining it was either there before the Trump guy moved in, or the Biden guy got it specifically as a spite pole.

Either way I bet it bugs the Trump guy daily. I imagine him like, “well great. What do I do? Do I get my own flag pole and look like a dummy because there already is one in front of our shared building? Or to I leave mine hanging horizontally out of the side of my house like an old grandma?”

I hope Biden guy flew it at half-mast on January 7th 😝

84

u/arlaton Aug 14 '22

Or just to not be lumped in with that guy. I recently saw a MAGA store in a strip mall and the surf shop next to them had a sign in their window to clarify that they were not associated with their neighbor.

With how hard MAGA people go with their flags, I can understand feeling like people will assume stuff about you too for being near them.

3

u/MashedPotatoesDick Aug 14 '22

With how hard MAGA people go with their flags, I can understand feeling like people will assume stuff about you too for being near them.

Donald Trump was born on Flag Day, so MAGA worships their Lard and Savior by displaying flags. Lots of them.

31

The thing I find most interesting is only the Biden guy has an actual American flag. The sort of bare minimum "being patriotic" thing.

9

Out of sheer spite.

53

u/couchy91 Aug 14 '22

I don't understand anyone who is that devoted to anything political.

23

u/Red_Ed Aug 14 '22

They're cultists mate. This is no longer being devoted to something. It's cultish brainwashing where there's a "Godhead" who can do nothing wrong, everything he said is good and right and has to be followed exactly and everyone not with you is an enemy.

The worst part is the deeper they go and the longer people are in a cult the harder is to get out. It becomes their identity and it's impossible for them to renounce "who they are" and admit their whole life was a sham. They would rather go more and more extreme to protect their identity and not have to admit they're whole life was wrong.

And the saddest part is that with social media more and more people get sucked into cultish behaviour by getting themselves into these bubble communities that are all about one thing and becomes their identity. Rabid vegans, anti-vaxers, anti work, even drinking water has started to become a cult.

4

u/lambusad0 Aug 14 '22

US Flag code states that here in the US, when displayed near any other flags, the US Flag should always be the highest. Something the guy with multiple flags seems to have missed.

(Source: have raised my country's flag while in uniform many, many times.)

7

u/SinkPhaze Aug 14 '22

They probably don't really communicate.

I've rented units in a duplex I own, and lived in, to various people, and I never talked to them (unless I already knew them), except when something was broken, both of us leading normal social lives.

It's not weird to not really talk to your duplex neighbor unless it's for some pragmatic reason. I'd just imagine they don't really ever talk.

You just know that one put up a sign and the other is just trolling him.

We have an American living in our neighborhood (Ontario Canada) and he has a Christian cross on his lawn, and US infantry insignia everywhere as well as a US flag. Oh and he doesn't know what a stop sign is for.

If I was his neighbor, you can bet that I'd have a Chinese flag up and demonic insignia up everywhere.

But maybe I'm just an ass.

One day I'll add a pic of his property to Reddit to just share.

What does "let's go brandon" actually mean? I've heard it thrown about, supposedly as an insult to Joe Biden, but I can't figure out why. Not from the US myself so I'm sure I'm missing something here

17

u/ActualAnimeVillain Aug 14 '22

At a nascar show, a reporter thought the crowd was shouting let’s go Brandon but they were actually chanting fuck joe Biden. It’s been trump supporters favorite thing ever since.

8

u/fangzie Aug 14 '22

Thanks! Still doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me but at least I now know how it came about

That happens with neighbors all over the US. You avoid talking politics and fight through signage.

5

u/Peterfettes Aug 14 '22

American political support is fucking weird. People act like groupies hanging posters of their favourite bands. It like East17 vs Take That. Grow up your adults - don’t let politics consume your life it’s all artificial. Vote when you need to vote but…. Live your best life focus on your family. Don’t scream at your neighbour because they have a different view.

Stop making politics into a national sport where everyone has to pick a team and you have to hate the other supporters. You're ruining your country.

19

u/Alphalykon Aug 14 '22

Except differences in politics nowadays are inextricably linked to moral differences. Or at least much more so than they were. This is why both sides are at each other’s throats.

23

u/DomLite Aug 14 '22

When the other side has been actively working for decades to try and make me into a second class citizen and is known to have it's members quip about once every five years that I should be put to death for existing, I'm gonna have to give a big "fuck no" to that suggestion. I don't hate them because of their differing politics, and in fact I think having an opposing view to bounce off of is a good thing when discussing fiscal policy and other such things. They've long since gone beyond that though, and turned it into their entire platform. One side has ceased to be a political party and is a cult of personality masquerading as one.

On the other hand, I don't worship the side I vote for myself, because I know that they are there to carry out the will of the people, not be some kind of enshrined leader. I can admire what they're doing, and cheer them on when they do good, but at the end of the day I only have support for them as long as they continue to do good for the nation and all it's people. When it's a choice between a party that is openly trying to protect the rights of the people and improve their lives or a party that is actively trying to strip those rights away and make life more painful for everyone, it's not even a choice.

Basically, wish we could. One side of things has decided to be a violent cult and is trying to steamroll their way through the law of the land to establish some kind of white supremacist theocracy. That means that everyone else who has the gift of rational thought must oppose them openly and vehemently or we're going to end up dead or oppressed. Feel free to try talking some sense into the psychopaths though. I'm sure your rousing one-line argument will get right through to them.

u/JustARandomSocialist Aug 14 '22

It really wasn't like that in America for a very long time. Then Fox News radicalized poor and middle class white Republicans and it was all over.

sorry but trump supporters arent just 'a different political view'

when your "political view" is to cut off medical aid to migrants detained at the boarder because it will cost some money then fuck you at the human level...

So we should be trying to get along with the very large group of people who want the country to regress socially 100 years and turn into a theocratic hellhole? Sure, they want me to be a second-class citizen with no rights, but surely we can find common ground and work things out! Lol

38

u/megaman368 Aug 14 '22

Exactly, this whole both sides thing is Total BS. No group is perfect. But they’re hardly equal but opposite. At this point a lot of the right is so far right you can’t have a constructive conversation. We simply don’t live in the Same reality.

u/Jorycle Aug 14 '22 edited Aug 14 '22

Yep.

My wife and I put our foot down and got rid of some friends these last few years. The change has just been too much.

We had conservative friends and we'd disagree on normal conservative politics. That was fine. But suddenly these disagreements were becoming about basic provable aspects of reality and often just downright hateful. And we'd do our best to correct bad information and push back, but we realized around 2020 that they were only getting significantly worse and our friendships weren't helping them be better at all, on top of just making us feel like shit.

It feels like watching radicalization in action.

Literally those behind Fox News are the reason for this.

Why must Americans put flags outside their houses? Do they regularly forget what country they’re in? No other country on the planet does this…

3

u/Mrhappytrigers Aug 14 '22

The "not my president" rhetoric cracks me up. If you live here as a citizen then who ever is your elected leader is means exactly that. You can hate them all you want, but you can't deny they're your president. This goes for me too.

That’s the beauty of America. We actually should be able to coexist just fine with differing opinions. Good for them!

3

u/younggundc Aug 14 '22

I find it so funny that Americans need to make their political affiliation part of their persona.
