Was the artwork provided by the candidate like that?

6.5k

u/confounded_norseman Jul 29 '22

The artwork isn't designed by the company. The customer can upload the picture on the website and the company will print them.

410

u/JohnSnowsPump Jul 29 '22

Most sign companies I know refuse to stop production because of an error made by the person paying for the sign. You paid for 1000 signs, you get 1000 signs.

Oh, you need to reprint because you're an idiot? Then you pay for another 1000 signs.

I'm guessing that's a per company decision. I work at a printing company and we absolutely would have stopped production, or refused to print it altogether had it been caught beforehand, mainly because had something like this gone out, there are people who would make it a point to find out who printed it and that wouldn't be good at all for the printer, even if they don't believe in whatever message it is, people will automatically assume you side with their beliefs. It took one time for us to find that out the hard way and since then we vet everything we print, especially political pieces.

I’m guessing they grabbed a Republican elephant image on-line and didn’t look too closely at it.

6.8k

u/artandmath Jul 29 '22 edited Jul 29 '22 Helpful Wholesome All-Seeing Upvote Starstruck Helpful (Pro)

Try to find it online. There are hundreds of stock republican elephant logos and I still haven’t found this one. There are quite a few that have similar style elephant trumpeting that but no hoods.

It’s purposeful to choose this one.

Edit: I finally found it very deep on Google (without reverse image search) and it’s on a page talking about GOP being racist.

I was attempting to replicate a graphic designer finding it by accident. If you’re looking for the image specifically it’s not hard to find. Notable is that the graphic designer would have had to specifically edit the logo as it’s not a blank white background, but an off white cream. This was definitely intentional, not an accident.

283

150

u/RunBanditRun Jul 29 '22

Wasn’t Indiana the ‘Klan State’?

67

u/smurfshoe Jul 29 '22

Indiana had the highest KKK membership per capita in the 1930's, I believe.

37

u/HazelNightengale Jul 29 '22

Notre Dame became "The Fighting Irish" due to a spat with the Klan.

12

u/CyrusBuelton Jul 29 '22

During the 1920's, Indiana was in fact ground zero for the second incarnation of the Ku Klux Klan Movement which began as a nationwide nativist movement. Klan Membership was common at this time among public officials and at one point claiming about one in every three native born males as members. This was very different from the KKK's original movement which consisted of the defeated confederate army becoming the terrorism arm of southern elites using white supremacy to regain power.

The conditions under which the Klan flourishes have always been the same: Times of great social and religious change bring about a fear of outsiders and immigrants, provoking a reaction marked by nativism and ripe for populist exploitation. The rise of communism, Irish immigration and the threat of war contributed additional fear in the Roaring Twenties.

The Indiana Klan attacked Catholics for their alleged immorality, anti-democratic tendencies, and allegiance to a foreign power.

The highest concentration of Catholics in the state was supposedly in South Bend, so the Indiana Klan planned to have a rally.

When the KKK arrived on May 24, 2024, they were apparently confronted by 500 students who had run the two miles into downtown from campus.

I hope this is some sort of joke because if not.......it seriously looks like Notre Dame is saying the "fighting Irish" nickname actually came from a clash that occurred in 1924 between students and Klan Members.

I was born[1980] and raised in the gloomy and sunless upper midwestern region known as "Michiana."

The origin of how Notre Dame became the Fighting Irish has always been a bit of a myth. Of course there are a few theories, some more plausible than others.

Seriously though...... ND became publicly known as the Fighting Irish after students brawled with the Klan back in 1924? It's strange it took all these years to uncover this mystery.

Then again....I'm just a towny.

It really took a bit. Kept scanning the words trying to find an error, which can be tough sometimes as your brain likes to autocorrect small errors. Then thought maybe the elephant. Does it have a dick visible? Too many legs, too few? Then I saw the negative space between the legs.

That has to be on purpose right? Not necessarily the fault of the person who used the image, but whomever designed it in the first place.

187

u/KombattWombatt Jul 29 '22

I'm a printer..... I'd have finished the entire run and been none the wiser.

u/Martel732 Jul 29 '22

Yeah, I am pretty sure there is no way I would have noticed that if it wasn't pointed out. I even looked at the elephants because I thought the black spots were weird.

Between the legs of each elephant, those aren't rocks, but rather resemble 3 KKK members.

Oh Jesus…. Lmao I didn’t even see that til I read this comment. Could you imagine the horror of the candidate? I mean, hopefully they were horrified… lol

Yeah, I can’t believe they used cobalt and navy blue together in the same design either.

That’s a confederate battle flag.

Looking through the comments, everyone seems to be only looking at the klan hoods. I think there are two other subtleties the artist hid:

  • the American flag is upside down
  • the elephants form the “stars and bars” confederate flag. The blue is a different shade, and a white bar beneath the blue field. They are also facing in the “X” pattern of the flag.

u/throwRAboundaryq Jul 30 '22

Yes. And all of these facts provide absolute evidence that this was an intentional choice on the designer's part, rather than an accident.

82

u/Volant_Piscator Jul 30 '22

Absolutely. It’s pretty well done. Without the klan hoods, the others could have been conveyed as an accident

The more annoying thing for me is that you can actually see where the image has been placed down ontop of the sign because the border loses a pixel line of colour

Nice Catch!

At least it's consistent on both sides

Ugh. And here I am staring at the god awful typography and didn’t even notice that. This is what happens when someone says “my cousin’s nephew is good with all that computer stuff.”

I heard it live 5 days ago, and it hasn’t left my head.

EDIT: 6 days, but I’m not trying to show off my math skills.

A lot of people saying it might just be accidental, but a local cop by me runs this website: https://thirteenfiftyapparel.com/

13-50 is just blatantly racist

Why does a sheriff have to have a political party? I know Everything is about politics, but why does it matter to his job?

So here’s the best part - it was stolen from a mother Jones article that’s all about how racist the gop has become. Mother Jones is notoriously liberal so there little chance this guy was reading it and found it cool. More than likely the designer he hired hated him and slipped it in as an Easter egg.

Article here : https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/08/racism-republican-party-stuart-stevens/

89

u/silver-orange Jul 29 '22

If you reverse image search that image, it's clearly been stolen and reused accidentally on a few party/candidate pages -- so there are multiple sources from which the sign printer might have stolen this.

u/DDRoseDoll Jul 29 '22

"Accidentally"

u/kurokame Jul 29 '22

Maybe the designer, not the printer.

But now I'm quite pleased that I didn't immediately see a hate symbol.
