Surprised it took this long. The Athletic story on the lack of pitching development didn’t do him any favors.

That story was horrifying. I felt bad for the poor kids that got drafted into that org

Well knowing Dayton Moore’s beliefs it is possible he thought God was drafting them

62

Can you expand on this? I'm out of the loop.

259

u/TheTurtleShepard New York Yankees Sep 21 '22

Dayton Moore is very open about his Christian beliefs going as far as to hold an anti-porn meeting for the team back in 2018. He has also been known to go after players and staff which align with his beliefs rather than the best baseball decision

51

u/Mutiny32 Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

He went after Salvy for having a child out of wedlock.

14

u/Xert Sep 21 '22

Not that I doubt you, but Google doesn't seem to have any details on this.

Luke “the Bible is my secret weapon” Weaver being the most recent example.

I’ve lived in KC for the majority of the last 15 years and it’s legitimately the only city/organization Dayton Moore could’ve been employed by for this long. He struck gold for 2 years but outside of that he’s been downright awful.

84

u/Gnux13 Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

What can we say? Dayton sure knows how to go out and get the best prayers.

52

u/_RedGyarados St. Louis Cardinals Sep 21 '22

“Hail Mary full of grace…”

“I said we need good players Dayton. Players.”

7

u/Basic_Bichette Toronto Blue Jays Sep 21 '22

Fun fact: as an Evangelical, he wouldn’t consider a Catholic prayer good.

3 winning seasons in 16 years.

79

u/RobotYoshimis Sep 21 '22

Despite the routine losing seasons, having 2 AL Pennants and a World Series championship under your belt in that span is overall pretty good.

However that might be despite him as opposed to because of him. Regardless its a good thing he's out.

37

u/tissboom Cincinnati Reds Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

I’d take a goofy ass Jesus freak running my team if it got us a World Series and 2 pennants.

19

u/Johnathon1069DYT Sep 21 '22

You say that now, but living in SW Ohio myself we'd likely end up with a giant Jesus statue in center field.

Gotta figure he knew he was getting fired when he made those statements.

39

u/jbronin Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

I'm betting 100% that those comments are the straw that broke the camels back and got him fired. Instead of taking control of the situation and fixing it he just stuck his head in the sand and blamed others.

u/UltraFinePointMarker Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 22 '22

I honestly think Moore's defensive reaction to that well-reported article was the nail in his coffin – and why he was fired today instead of during the off-season.

10

u/U-N-C-L-E Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

In the press conference today, the owner made a reference to "we need to use more data in decision making." So I think you're dead on.

122

u/Ferris_Wheel_Skippy Chicago Cubs Sep 21 '22

Also said he isn’t disappointed with the way this season has gone.

this pretty much sums up why the Royals haven't been seriously competitive since the second half of 2016

it really just goes to show you that in a lot of ways, America is absolutely not a meritocracy. I wonder who Dayton blew to keep his job for so long

19

u/SHOW_ME_PIZZA Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

I think it was the fact he built the team that went to back to back World Series which is extra impressive when you factor in it being a small market team. That being said when there's a certain culture you've cultivated that has run contrary to winning baseball games. You need to go.

74

u/Wuropp Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

Multiple times this season he has either said, or suggested, that it's not about winning and losing, it's about being a good person. He'd be a great commissioner but he is an awful GM.

50

u/Ferris_Wheel_Skippy Chicago Cubs Sep 21 '22

Multiple times this season he has either said, or suggested, that it's not about winning and losing, it's about being a good person.

lol this guy sounds like an absolute nimrod

i get that especially in baseball, teams like the Royals absolutely have the deck stacked against them...but to outright say bullshit like that when literally millions and millions of dollars are on the line is pretty inexcusable

10

u/Skullboy_Q Sep 21 '22

Front office doesn’t necessarily care about on field performance as long as the franchise is profitable. It’d be interesting to see the cost/profit margins for the team over the last decade or two. Is the team more profitable when they skimp, and suck? Or did they rake more when they spent more, and were competing?

A small market team like KC also isn’t competing with the other sports for popularity as much, since football and soccer are the only other franchises in the area. They also benefit from gap states with no professional sports like Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas (I know, MLS team is there).

I’m not sure millions of dollars are on the line, if they are still making millions of dollars.

u/Peanut4michigan Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

Yeah. It's a shame there wasn't someone else like Kauffman to take over. He was willing to lose money on the team in order to field a competitive club. It's been an ownership nightmare ever since his death.

Under his ownership, the first 2 seasons were the only 2 seasons with less than 70 wins. Since his death, we've had 13 seasons with fewer than 70 wins. Between his charities, pumping extra money into the stadium to get it completed on time (despite the workers striking in the middle of construction), willingly losing millions on the team, and writing into his will the team must be kept in KC even if it's sold made Kauffman such a unique owner. Going from arguably the best ever to one of the absolute worst has hurt a lot.

He was allowed to become complacent.

To his credit, he turned around one of the absolute worst franchises in the history of North American major league sports. He had to rebuild the entire organization. When he took over, the Latin American budget was ~$200,000...scouting, travel, contracts, everything.

The minors were disjointed and there was no continuity or plan...it was a disaster from the bottom up. He fixed it, but then didn't continue moving forward. Scouting and development stagnated and he left the wrong people in place for the wrong reasons.

He needed to move on 5 years ago.

Does this mean the Royals can finally watch porn again?

426

u/TheTurtleShepard New York Yankees Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

Honestly holding an anti-porn seminar for a collection of grown men is crazy. Imagine going to work and seeing an anti-porn meeting on your calendar

83

u/Herpadew Atlanta Braves Sep 21 '22

Funnily enough I have a friend who was in the Royals farm system for a handful of years, and he did specifically mention that there were players who would blast porn over their phone speaker and watch it openly in the locker room.

Admittedly idk if that’s common behavior at that level but it always stuck with me for one reason or another

26

u/conman14 New York Mets Sep 21 '22

In the UK, we had a Member of Parliament for the governing Conservative party who resigned earlier this year because he was caught watching porn on his phone during the middle of a debate in the House of Commons (our lower chamber). He tried to claim he was trying to look up tractors (his constituency is pretty rural) and must have typed the address wrong - make of that what you will.

The Conservatives ended up losing the ensuing by-election, having held that seat for nearly 100 years.

12

u/Azazel_brah Sep 22 '22

He tried to claim he was trying to look up tractors

Well Big Wet Tires 9 was a staple in boner jams '07 so I can't blame him

42

u/TheTurtleShepard New York Yankees Sep 21 '22

That seems like an insane thing to do. I can’t imagine that’s commonplace but I get as a way to stick it to the shitty GM

4

u/High_n_tight_77 Cleveland Indians Sep 22 '22

Apparently the tight end Kellen Winslow Jr constantly watched porn (I’m talking in the locker room, team meetings, in his car) and he would get his own room during away games because he would constantly be cranking it. Then he turned into a predator.

31

u/danaozideshihou Minnesota Twins Sep 21 '22

I spent 4 years in the military, and outside of when I was deployed it was a damn near weekly barrage of "don't beat your wives/girlfriend", "don't drink and drive", etc. Honestly an anti-porn one would have been a welcome sight, and one that we may actually pay attention to, solely because of curiousity of how they'll spin it.

45

u/Basic_Bichette Toronto Blue Jays Sep 21 '22

And yet one would think "don't commit crimes that can kill and maim innocent third parties" would be easier to get through than "here's how you're supposed to conduct your private sex life".

Why "don't buy a big fancy vehicle from the predatory car lot located 200 feet outside the camp gates" isn’t the first seminar is beyond me.

u/ThatNewSockFeel Milwaukee Brewers Sep 21 '22

I used to go to a church pretty regularly up until the pandemic hit. Honestly, my church wasn't really as intense about the anti-porn stuff, but my ex-pastor (who was a real piece of shit) was tied to a totally separate church that regularly held these kinds of meetings

47

u/TheTurtleShepard New York Yankees Sep 21 '22

I understand it happening in some kind of religious org if that’s their beliefs. But holding a meeting like that at your job is wild

14

u/Ferris_Wheel_Skippy Chicago Cubs Sep 21 '22

oh yeah for sure lol. sorry it wasn't meant as a counterpoint, more of like a "yeah the fact that this shit exists is dumb." the fact that a team of professional baseball players who make millioins and millions of dollars being forced to watch an anti-porn seminar that is likely tailored for middle school kids is fucking hilarious

the irony is that the larger church where my ex-pastor "found his calling" before coming to preach at the smaller church i attended...just had a massive fallout from senior church staff covering up sex abuse and infidelity from the senior pastor. Lol this shit is so commonplace now, is it any surprise that people lose faith in these institutions?

Also no more faith-based personnel decisions.

Kiss your ass goodbye, Ryan O'Hearn

51

u/MrGenericPoster Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

At least O'Hearn doesn't take many starts away from young players, just a few pinch-hit ABs.

Dozier though... due $16.25M over the next 2 years to be the worst player in baseball. Eating up opportunities for decent players. Starting him just so he can get his $1.5M contract escalators. That had better stop now that Dayton is gone.

34

u/ThePelvicWoo Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

The problem with O'Hearn is that every year there are guys non-tendered that are way better than him. To not actively try to replace him is pure negligence. There is no merit based argument that he should be on an MLB roster

19

u/MrGenericPoster Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

You're probably right that with Dayton gone, he's on his final year in the league.

He has a .969 OPS when pinch hitting, but a .427 when starting. A few years ago I think an NL team would take a flyer on him as a pinch hitter. But having a pinch hitter with no defense isn't going to be worth a roster spot in today's game.

14

u/Peanut4michigan Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

Our pitchers started seeking outside coaching because our organizational pitching coaching is so bad. Eldred hasn't even had to feel his seat getting hot since Matheny loves him, and we extended Matheny through next year before this season. Hopefully firing Moore leads to the rest of these bums getting fired next month.

16

u/R1ckMartel St. Louis Cardinals Sep 21 '22

One of the most stunning developments in recent baseball history is that the Royals were even good at all under his management.

They were a league average offense with elite defense, below average starters, a great bullpen, and a manager not known for strategic prowess.

A team with a wRC of 99 and an xFIP in the bottom quarter of the league wouldn't normally scare people, but it all came together for them.

They had a ton of top five picks, and most were slightly above average to complete busts (Moustakas, Hosmer, Hochevar, Bubba Starling).

Looking back, I'm still and amazed that happened.

15

u/TheQuietElitist Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

Devil Magic and a bullpen so good that even Ned Yost couldn't mismanage it. Also, Yost was the right manager for that team because he was very player-friendly, personalities like Cain, Hoz, and Moose don't work the best under strict managers.

Well there is a cold front moving through Kansas today, so there’s the wind…

12

u/Zachluigi Atlanta Braves Sep 21 '22

I remember when the Braves wanted to interview Moore after Coppy got fired and banned from baseball. Imagine a world where Dayton Moore was hired on as Braves GM instead of Alex Anthopoulus. shudders

8

u/thekidfromyesterday Atlanta Braves Sep 21 '22

My flair for that period was "Say no to GMDM"

5

u/too_old_for_memes Sep 21 '22

God I wish that would have happened. Obviously I’m a Mets fan. It would have been a disaster and this year would have Been a lot less fun but also a lot less cardiac episode inducing

9

u/Dispkerdis Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

I quite literally thought he would die before being fired from this organization.

Hopefully this means change on an organizational level, but I’m dubious that JJ Picollo will be all that different from Moore being that they were so closely aligned.

Is it crazy to say I think he's the worst GM to win a world series in the past 25 years?

40

u/ddottay MLBPA Sep 21 '22

And he almost won 2 back to back!

10

u/SantaKlawz2 San Francisco Giants Sep 21 '22

Being a fan of both the Giants and the Royals that 1st world series was fun as fuck for me.

Probably a fair assessment. 15 full seasons as GM/President of baseball ops and only three winning seasons. He went all in on two World Series and it payed off for him, he would have been gone sooner if it weren't for those two appearances and the one win.

7

u/Peanut4michigan Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

Maybe, but Glass didn't give a shit about fielding a successful team at all which is why his tenure as owner was so painful. Before hiring Moore as GM, Glass just turned the Royals into a farm team for the rest of the league. Moore went big brain on him and said, "We can't trade away all of our elite players if we simply don't develop any elite players!"

19

u/Merkles_Boner_ San Francisco Giants Sep 21 '22

Building a homegrown WS team in a small market is at least more impressive to me than Dombrowski's teams where he floats around and throws out big contracts

u/leverich1991 Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

I mean that WS win pretty much handed him another 7 seasons…. which the Royals have finished them all at or below .500.

10

u/1990Buscemi St. Louis Cardinals Sep 21 '22

It's between him and Ben Cherington, who has had a grand total of one winning season in his time as a GM with Boston and Pittsburgh. That one winning season just happened to be a World Series winner.

5

The entire Org needs an overhaul, this is hopefully just the first step. Sherman talking about needing more Data driven decisions gives me optimism that they actually want to change.

Can't be a small market team and make no effort to be ahead of the curve.

2014-2015 was an amazing magical time and we’ll always appreciate Dayton for that but decisions like hiring Matheny when they had a youth movement coming fast was borderline malfeasance.

Taking the team to its first WS win in 30 years probably got him enough good will to hang around until now

10

u/saulfineman Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

It’s not just that… he won the Series, that buys you some time… in 2019 the Royals are sold and get a new owner.

So the owner takes over and the world goes to shit in 2020.
So the owner gave him some time as we come out of the pandemic. So the whole process of his demise was elongated due to outside circumstances, imho.

4

u/leverich1991 Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

And since that WS title the Royals have finished every year at or below .500…

If Picollo is staying I'm hoping that Sherman can use his Cleveland snag one of the Guardians baseball operations personnel to serve as his assistant GM. We have a long way to go in revamping our pitching analytics, scouting, and development.

5

u/everything_is_holy Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

We're celebrating like we won it all tonight! Happy day!

4

u/ChevalMalFet Kansas City Royals Sep 21 '22

I started to feel uneasy about Dayton in 2018, but all our stars left and I told myself that a World Series win buys 5 years of grace.

Well, now's been nearly 3 solid seasons - 2020, 2021, and 2022 - of me not trusting Dayton at all, and seeing repeated and obvious screwups torpedo attempts at a rebuild.

I'll always be thankful for 2014-2015, but I'm glad to see the back of him.
