LPT: The best place to use the restroom on long road trips are the lobby restrooms at mid to high end hotels Traveling

I’m on the road a lot for work and I struggle with filthy gas station restrooms that are tended to with Febreze once a fiscal quarter. I don’t know if it’s just a mental block or other people feel the same, but I just lock up in fear.

I’ve found no where more comfortable and inviting than the restrooms on the first floor of all mid-range+ hotels.

Hotels are in every decent sized city I pass. The lobby restroom is usually empty & rarely used beyond check-in time since everyone has a bathroom in their room. They have always been clean and well stocked. You can generally walk right in past the lobby since the receptionist will just assume you’re already a guest of the hotel. And there’s usually another exit if you feel self conscious about walking past the front desk again.

Don’t read past here if you’re going to complain about reading past here

1st Tier (more privacy, less frequent sudden door handle jiggling when you’re in the middle of managing your affairs) - Buc-ee’s - Loves / Pilot / Flying J’s - Most trucker stops - Libraries - Kwik Trip - Churches - Casinos (Mostly agree, it’ll be a 4+ star experience) - Fancy Department Stores at the mall - Cracker Barrel - Hospitals (particularly if you’re there for IBS)

2nd Tier (less privacy, could be out of the way, clean enough) - Grocery Stores (mixed experience here. Brookshire’s is fine. If you’re in CA and still have Lucky’s or Albertsons; pretty gross. Safeway is a hit or miss) - Target - Kohl’s - Sporting Equipment Stores

3rd Tier (single public toilet establishments & acceptable to some of you, but I can’t do it if there are any other choices available) - Portapoties - Camping Gear Sets - Fast Food Restrooms & Subway - Colleges (had a lot of experiences with this in school. Mixed bag. If you go to the school, you probably scoped put the best one. Newly built library? Perfect! The old chem lab? Some floors better than others. - [Warning: Might be sexist] Craft Stores & Joanne’s if you’re a man. Home Depot if you’re a woman. You people (derogatory) said it.

Under review. Currently traveling, will confirm. - Lowe’s (due to insider leak - former employee claims it’s impossible due to 3rd party cleaning company) - McDonald’s…. maybe. Do they have paper towels now or do I still have to use the air dryer and open the door with my sleeve? - Car Dealerships - mixed bag for me on this one. Yes they are normally clean, but if you’re parked on the sales side, that sales dude is gonna be waiting for you at the door.

There’s a population of people like me who have a tough time using the restroom without substantial privacy. I think we’re the same group of people who close the door when we use the restroom at home. Unlike you savages that use the toilet with multiple doors open chit chatting with your kids while you’re watching your bathroom TV and eating Cheetos.

Places like Loves are consistently clean. The big Truck Stops are always good.

752

u/taveanator Aug 07 '22

Loves > Pilot for others that are reading this. Like, big time. There’s some shady as hell Pilot stops out there, but still better then your average gas station because of the increased foot traffic.

How expensive is it? The mom and pop truck stop near me charges 10 dollars for a shower. I thought that was pretty high but I'm not a trucker/traveler and its one of the only truck stops I've been in.

93

u/seeess777 Aug 07 '22

Last I checked they were $14. If you need a shower on the road, just ask a trucker if they will do a team shower. It cost them nothing, they don't mind doing it and it's two separate showers for the price of one. OTR truck drivers never pay for showers. They are free with 50gal fuel purchases and the credits stack. *This applies to the big 3 truck stops Loves,P-FJ, T/A-Petro

30

u/fordprecept Aug 07 '22

just ask a trucker if they will do a team shower

I'd be afraid they'd take that question the wrong way. lol

→ More replies

24

u/rosecitytransit Aug 07 '22

Also, I've read here that many drivers there may have unused credits because they do short-haul and are back by the end of the day (or maybe almost always are given a hotel room)

80

u/Meltedgibson Aug 07 '22

What do you mean by "team shower"?

96

u/seeess777 Aug 07 '22

Team driving operations. In those situations, there are two drivers operating a truck 24/7. With each shower credit you can redeem two showers. At the diesel desk you ask for a team shower and they give you two showers for one credit.

38

u/well_uh_yeah Aug 07 '22

...and do all truckers know that's what someone means if they ask it? One wouldn't want it to come across the wrong way...

26

u/Baby-Fark-Mc-Gee-zax Aug 07 '22

u/Caren_Nymbee Aug 07 '22

No one should support Pilot, ever. The Haslam family(owners) preyed on truckers for years with a fraudulent voucher program stealing from them, and just recently guaranteed a quarter of a billion dollars to a serial sexual predator to play for the Browns, and then mocked victims of assault.

Vile, irredeemable people

15

u/wankamasta Aug 07 '22

Oh dang, I didn’t realize Pilot was as part of the Haslam fraud regime. Fuckin’ rich people, man.

6

u/48stateMave Aug 07 '22

Yeah, how about that Pilot whistleblower thing from a few years ago? Finally caught them. They get away with stuff for so long they forget it's actually illegal, and end up telling on themselves by openly admitting their wrongdoing.

Love's is beyond excellent. My car broke down at a Love's on the way to St Louis a year ago and it was the best place I could have ever hoped to break down. The employees knew the local mechanics and had no problem letting me chill in the parking area while the guy worked on my car. Super clean bathrooms and actual food.

That car was beyond fucked though. Electrical issues out the ass. It had to be flatbedded back home. That was the last time it ever drove anywhere.

Came here to say this. Big truck stops are staffed better 24/7 and tend to stay much cleaner than a gas station with 1-2 attendants

103

u/PaulAspie Aug 07 '22

And many have full doors on bathroom stalls. After basic cleanliness, my biggest issue with public restrooms is some make to way to easy for others to see you go to the bathroom.

48

u/hitemlow Aug 07 '22

For $12, you can get a full shower with towels, soap, and washcloths included.

42

u/ardatwork Aug 07 '22

Make sure you bring your shower sandals...

32

u/going_going_done Aug 07 '22

You can buy them in the store if you don't have some with you. I have done this.

26

u/LovinLoveLeigh Aug 07 '22

And many have full doors on bathroom stalls

is this a pro tip only in America?

20

u/Serotu Aug 07 '22

Sadly yes. A lot of places are concerned with drug addicts shooting up, mentally ill people making horrible messes and/or good ol fashioned filthy public restroom sex... So they take away just as much privacy as they can while still giving the bare minimum to be "usable". And yes. I absolutely shut the door when dropping a biscuit in the basket (just saw this phrase recently and I thought it was hysterical lol). I don't wanna see or talk to ANYONE while doing so.

8

u/firelock_ny Aug 07 '22

I've heard that this started becoming a thing because stalls that didn't have walls all the way to the floor made mopping the floors much faster and easier.

5

u/fake_geek_gurl Aug 07 '22

As someone who's done custodial, I've never found it made any difference.

Also, they usually have showers. If you've been driving for a while and are starting to feel fatigued, stop at a truck stop and take a 10 minute shower. A 30 minute stop like that always wakes me up and I can get a few more hours on the road. Plus I like to look at all the random trucker shit they sell.

55

u/effingthingsucks Aug 07 '22

Let's be honest. You just like to window shop the trucker stuff.

33

u/BuddhasGarden Aug 07 '22

I’m old enough remember Stuckey’s. They had taffy, a diner, gift shop, gas, etc. Blue Roof. There are Stuckey’s skeletons all over the west, left to rot after going out of business.

What exactly is trucker type stuff they sell? I’ve never been to a truck stop in my life.

75

u/puppibreath Aug 07 '22

They have all the tacky and awesome souvenirs that can only be from wherever you are. Mexican sarapes and cactus ashtrays in AZ, ufo men in Roswell, dice with your name in Nevada..you get the point. Hats, always hats with cool saying and glitter for the trucker chicks.

Seems they always have boxes, like trinket boxes and jewelry boxes with shiny, inlaid designs. Tshirts, signs and bumber stickers with the newest funny, or bible sayings... Pricey stuffed animals.

Anything to make driving or riding comfortable... Pillows for your neck or bum, blankets, pull down shades, shiny things to put on trucks or mudflaps with that trucker lady sillouette. Always a couple Cds and lots of DVDs.

I think there is still a full isle of wired things, for the life of me I can't remember what they are. Things like antennas, DVD players and things that break( knobs and levers) things with coiled cords like cb things in those plastic boxes you need monster scissors to open.

Many things that plug into USBs like fans, and little disco balls, food coolers, drink coosies and drink warmers. Chargers with double ends, long long cords, and self wind cords. Decor for trucks ... Hula girls and doggie bobble heads. Flip flops. Socks. And actually good food, cinnabon, fresh pizza, and soup salad bars.

20

u/Poet_Silly Aug 07 '22

This guy trucks! And thank you for your service.

3

u/puppibreath Aug 07 '22

Lol, no, not a trucker. We have just driven the same roads for years and have our favorite spots to stop. We tend to like truck stops because they have convenient access on and off the freeways and overall just better than the same ol circle K .

11

u/PasgettiMonster Aug 07 '22

I've driven cross country multiple times in the last 20 years and absolutely I would rather stop at one of the big truck stops over one of the regular gas stations even if the truck stop involves navigating through more parking lots or being on the wrong side of the highway. The fact that the stops gave me enough meal options that I didn't have to eat fast food for every meal was enough to sell me on the idea because 4 to 5 days of eating nothing but fast food will really screw your system up.

7

u/Daforce1 Aug 07 '22

Love’s is my go to for clean bathrooms and because they’re always located in the most convenient possible spots so you can get in and off the road as quickly as possible. Road tripping as a single female I’m also more comfortable pulling up to a Love’s than some random gas station anytime.

Emegency Room Bathroom in america sounds like it could cost money.

307

u/Rygree10 Aug 07 '22

Surprisingly it’s the one thing you don’t pay for in America. Rest of the world gets free health care but has to pay for public bathrooms. Americans get free public bathrooms but have to pay for healthcare out of pocket.

8

Dont you get to use it for free if you fill your gas tank? Atleast here in slovenia, you either get a code on the receipt or you pay at the toilet and get the redeemable code for the gas station

12

u/AnObsessedRedditor Aug 07 '22

I've been in Germany quite a few times. Generally you pay 70 cents (for a very well maintened and cleaned toilet), but that includes a 50 cent voucher if you want to buy anything at the stores at that tank station. It sometimes includes things like McDonald's. Germany has really good shopping places and that technically makes it only a 20 cent poop.

I’ve found that hospitals keep their bathrooms spotless and nobody bats an eye if your business takes 15 seconds or 15 minutes. It’s usually pretty easy to find single-seaters.

I also don’t feel the need to buy anything at the local ER.

74

u/strain_of_thought Aug 07 '22

I came into the thread to post this. Hospital bathrooms are cleaned very frequently, they're open 24 hours, hospitals have good security, and there are actual signs on the highway telling you when there's a hospital nearby.

70

u/xarmetheusx Aug 07 '22

A lot of hospitals were requiring you to check in due to covid at the entrance with what you're business is, so they might not let you in just to take a piss. It's been getting more relaxed as of late, but can't count on it.

Good advice, but if you're out on the highway there are many exits that lack hotels, so sooner or later the dreaded gas station option will rear its ugly head.

102

u/GroinShotz Aug 07 '22

Hit up a "trucker" gas station. Bathrooms are usually immaculate. Plus if you wanted, you could take a shower (sometimes)!

35

u/Nikoli_Delphinki Aug 07 '22

About a decade ago I visited DC for the 4th of July. It was hot. It was humid. I was covered in sweat and salt by the end of the day. Driving home was miserable and I desperately needed a shower. I pulled over into a trucker fill station (Loves) and paid $12 for shower. It came with a fresh towel, soap, and plenty of hot water. Worth every fucking penny.

21

Often, truckers will help you out if you need a shower because many get a pass to use the shower at specific chains whenever they want and will hook people up you need it.

I try to find the Loves’s and plan to stop at those. They tend to keep their bathrooms decently clean as they cater to truckers. That being said, I had a pleasant dump in a nice, clean Loves last week but my mom said the women’s bathroom reeked of piss.

That stall was nice though, it was very enclosed for an American toilet stall, it didn’t have those shitty metal walls with the big gaps.

46

u/Huracanekelly Aug 07 '22

I love that Love's has started adding little dog parks to their lots for the trucker's dogs. Such a good stop!

9

u/Yesterday_Is_Now Aug 07 '22

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I've passed by a Love's here and there, but wasn't sure of its reputation. Will check it out next time.

No Buc-ees anywhere near me, but it sounds like a company with its heart in the right place.

I should add that fast food restaurants are typically a bit better in the restroom department than gas stations, but your luck may vary.

The worst I've seen is the rest stops on the godforsaken New Jersey Turnpike.

6

u/Dangerous-Socks Aug 07 '22

Jersey turnpike is the worst. And the air usually smells bad too.

3

u/didgeridoodady Aug 07 '22

New Jersey Turnpike

oh yes over 10 bucks for a pizza hut personal pizza the size of a baby's hand

51

u/aroc91 Aug 07 '22

If you have the good fortune of a Buc-ee's along your route, that's the place to stop. Bathrooms are expansive, private, and immaculate. The massive store with good snacks, etc. and decently priced gas with hundreds of pumps is just a bonus.

15

u/anonkraken Aug 07 '22

We just got a Buc-cee’s in SC and I actually plan my work drives around it. Shame it really only serves the Myrtle Beach tourist crowd. Hope to see more around Charleston and Columbia someday.

I think this is a better tip for visiting large cities than long road trips. In my experience there aren’t many nice hotels right off the highway, unless you’re near a big airport.

On the other hand, I live in a big city with virtually no public restrooms and I’ve slipped into hotels and used their facilities with no problem. There’s no shortage of mid-nice hotels in a big city and you can just find one on your phone. I even have a favorite hotel bathroom in my city even though I’ve never been a guest there.

8

u/Yesterday_Is_Now Aug 07 '22

I wonder if there's a "find clean bathroom" crowdsourced app out there somewhere, like Waze except that people report a different kind of back-up. :)

This doesn't always work. I was in San Francisco and I had arrived at the hotel I was staying at and before checking in I needed to use the restroom but at the restroom door you had to scan the key card to open the door so I went to the lobby to ask for someone to open the door and they asked if I even staying at the hotel and made me check in and confirm I was staying there.

240

u/Comfort_Lettuce Aug 07 '22

You are correct, this will not apply for SF. I lived there. There’s a reason why there’s so much doo on the streets.

65

u/thepopcornisready Aug 07 '22

For downtown SF you find a mall/department store, head to the highest floor with a bathroom, and hope for the best (usually it's pretty good!)

They do the same thing in Chicago. I’ve had to poop behind dumpsters in the Loop in broad daylight because nobody will allow you to use their bathroom.

That's because of the homeless issues they have there.

Bucees are the best

11

u/kne0n Aug 07 '22

Whenever I go from DFW to Galveston I use Buccees like people on the Oregon trail used forts, I plan the entire route around stopping only at Buccees and museums/attractions and use the Buccees to top off the tank and resupply on drinks and snacks.

54

u/rhineStoneCoder Aug 07 '22

When driving long distance in Texas, I try to hold it until the next Bucees. Usually see billboards starting 100 miles away.

26

u/EnthusiasmNo6514 Aug 07 '22

QTs are great too!

15

u/Tritonian214 Aug 07 '22

QT is amazing... As a delivery driver in Dallas I try to seek them out for bathroom break or lunch

To me it's the best option within the metroplex as all the buccees are on the outskirts

Pretty funny - my MIL lives in Buc-ee's country, and was always telling us about how great they are, and how even the bathrooms were spotless. So we had an ongoing joke about how we needed to get to a Buc-ee's ASAP next time we visited, etc. So next time we were down there, we eventually made it to a Buc-ee's, and I said it was all wonderful, but what I really needed to see was the bathroom. I go in, and the first thing I see in the stall is a wadded-up pair of shit-covered underwear behind the toilet. I couldn't wait to get out of the bathroom and give her my review of her beloved Buc-ee's bathrooms! 🤣

I once was on a long trip on a weekday and had to shit super bad, and I also didn’t want to use a gas station bathroom, so got off an exit and found a random church with the hopes that it’d be unlocked. Unlocked it was, and I walked right in, found the bathroom, took a shit and left. It was clean and nobody said a thing about it

McDonald’s restrooms are usually clean enough. There’s the occasional odd duck that’s a lil gross, but they seem to be few and far between.

Source: solo female hiker who roadtrips errrrywhere and relies on Mickey d’s cokes

12

u/germanmancat Aug 07 '22

When I drove 4000 miles finding a restroom the was clean was not an issue at all. This country has some amazing rest stops

88

u/dewioffendu Aug 07 '22

I've also found that, believe it or not, McDonalds is a pretty safe bet too. Hotels that are big enough to hold large gatherings or conventions are pretty clean and you can always go through undetected.

22

u/exscapegoat Aug 07 '22

Usually chain stores/restaurants are good places to go. If they require a purchase for a bathroom code, I buy something inexpensive that I can use later. Bottle of water, for later. For example

33

u/QuarterNoteBandit Aug 07 '22

I thought it was common knowledge that McDonald's is one of the best public bathroom businesses.

12

u/dewioffendu Aug 07 '22

I try to avoid fast food places and gas stations at all cost but McDonalds is usually pretty clean. When you use public bathrooms as much as I have to you start to question humanity. I try to leave no footprint when I'm done with the bathroom because I've had so many emergencies and there is nothing worse than having to hover over a toilet when you have to go. We live at baseball/softball tournaments all summer and I don't know how my wife and daughter do it in the portables. Gross!

10

u/bang_the_drums Aug 07 '22

McDonald's is the real traveling life hack. They're everywhere. 9 times out of 10 they have exactly the same layout so the bathroom is always on the right side and there's usually a side door so you can sneak in without making eye contact with the staff. In and out. Majority of the time it's clean compared to some of the abominations I've seen during 50k miles of travel. Walking into a hotel to shit in their lobby restroom seems like such a weird thing to do for me. Use one of the big truck stop chains or McDonalds, jesus.

As someone who has worked at multiple Lowes locations, and visited the restrooms of many many more... I'm not sure how they are on a list of places to enter the restroom. Especially since they outsourced their cleaning to third parties. And as clean as Target stores themselves are, I've been in very few Target bathrooms where I didn't just walk out and go somewhere else. I've had better luck with Walmart restrooms than Target ones.

16

u/Zachariah255 Aug 07 '22

For those who use the men's restroom, you'll find there significantly cleaner at a place like Michaels or Joann's Fabrics because not that many men shop there.

80

u/PrisonerV Aug 07 '22

JC Pennys and Kohls is like immaculate. Some of them have like a couch in case you want to shit and then hang out in the men's room.

22

u/SimplePigeon Aug 07 '22

I do not understand the bathroom couch. I will never understand the bathroom couch. If it’s supposed to be for someone waiting for you to be done… why wouldn’t they wait outside? Why do they need to be attending this event?

Yeah they're gross in my experience, as a dude that purchases fabric and other last minute craft supplies pretty regularly. Or they at best smell bad. They're worse than a box store or an average gas station for sure.

Also, weird tip for travelers... because Michael's or Joann's or any other craft store is gonna be out of the way most likely anyways.

11

u/Doomer_Patrol Aug 07 '22

I second this. They're not high end stores, skeleton crew most places.

Precisely because they never get used, they're always a disaster. Why would employees spend what little time they got cleaning something nobody uses (much)?

Don't forget Kwik Star which are renamed Kwik Trips in Iowa and Illinois to avoid confusion with Quik Trips. But yeah, I do agree. Kwik Trip/Kwik Star is the best for northern Midwest. Miss them badly. Moved to Georgia last year, and the best we have here is QuikTrip and Circle K.

Starbucks. Two Unisex one person lockable bathrooms at your service. Don't fuck them up for the underpaid staff, but they truly are the best.

37

u/Comfort_Lettuce Aug 07 '22

I’ve nixed Starbucks because I’ve seen a lot of solo restroom locations. I always hate it when I’m on an extended stay in the restroom and I walk out to a line outside the door. People… staring. Parents with kids crossing their legs. The elderly person in the back who can’t wait anymore but is now behind 5 other people.

8

u/graygoosegg Aug 07 '22

I'm totally in agreement with you about the hotels. We did a huge road trip last year, and hotel bathrooms are by far the nicest. And I loooooove going to the fancy hotels just to go to the bathroom! Having worked front desk at one, you're right, no one cares. And they have nice hand soaps.

And the people saying to go to Starbucks have never had the pleasure of using one in NYC. Fucking traumatizing.

I would also add TJMaxx, Lowes and Home Depot to your list. They are EVERWHERE and the bathrooms aren't used much. Multiple stalls, private.
