My favorite is hit them with this. I agree a persons race in a story shouldn’t be changed it’s horrible and disregards the original work. Finish with so you agree Jesus wasn’t white? Watch them get so damn pissed.

Finish with so you agree Jesus wasn’t white? Watch them get so damn pissed.

They just screech "We don't know what color Jesus was!!!11!" as their brain reboots..

There was a thread on r/all last year where multiple people went to great and torturous lengths to come up with plausible scenarios for how Jesus could have been a lighter shade of pale..

Equating this to the Jesus thing kinda goes against the point tho, right? We think that Jesus being white is dumb and wrong, so comparing the two gives them the opportunity to say "yes, both of those things are dumb and wrong" and you're back to square one lol.

535

Tolkien explicitly based them on Mongols.

The Red Book of Westmarch is actually just an apologia for preemptive war and first strike WMD use. The writers of the Red Book of Westmarch (Bilbo then Frodo) only have access to Elvish sources which consistently demonize their enemy + their firsthand experience which was only ever in the context of war. It's a great example of history being written by the victors.

If it was realistic they would have had a worldwide empire that would make a British monarch green with envy, instead of quietly staying out of everyone's business to avoid steamrolling them. We would be speaking wakandan instead of english!

5

u/Akshin_Blacksin ☑️ Sep 13 '22 edited Sep 13 '22

Yeah because China wanted to invade the world when they were ahead technology wise. Let’s compare Wakandas to China when Europe first came to their shores.

How different would history be if China not only invented Gunpowder as well as uranium but it was only available in China and chose not share it with the world? They took in resources and information from others but never gave anything out what they did.

That’s Wakanda, a African Country that was never invaded, had a rare resource but NEVER share it or the it knowledge with the world. Because while they saw Africa enslaved they choose to hide their power and defend their borders so they wouldn’t fall under the power of colonization.

It’s a representation of any country that fell in power to colonization if they weren’t willing to cooperate with Europe and weren’t willing to share their knowledge…

If we're going to be analytical and base it on myth, she's greek or of mediterranean descent. Ariel is the daughter of Triton a Greek minor God. So his myth was created by ancient Greek people so they must have imagined him looking Greek or with mediterranean features. It goes then that Ariel would look of mediterranean descent.

83

u/UrbanGM ☑️ Sep 12 '22

That was Disney's interpretation of a Danish story so they obviously took liberties. So I don't buy the Greek basis of myth considering that mermaids are present in plenty of cultures.

30

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '22

The first mermaid was from syria, but the Greeks invented the myth of the Siren which would lure sailors to their death. As for which Ariel is, well, I haven't seen her murder anyone yet

99

u/Agreeable_Giraffe_63 Sep 12 '22

What’s even more confusing is the mermaid in the book looks drastically different than Ariel and the book all together is quit sad and depressing. Disney took great lengths to make it into a happy and vibrant children’s movie but no one seems to be complaining about that
